British pub group J D Wetherspoon reports higher sales but cost challenges loom
UK pub groups, which enjoyed stellar festive-season sales, are now facing tempered growth prospects as higher taxes and labour costs fuel concerns about price hikes that could hurt consumer spending. The British pub chain, which employs more than 42,000 people, expects its labour-related costs to increase by around 60 million pounds ($73.91 million) per year. The pub group, often referred to as "Spoons", has sold several underperforming venues and been expanding to high-traffic locations.

China's navy commissions new-generation frigate as competition rises with US and others
China's navy has commissioned a new-generation frigate as competition rises with the U.S. and other regional powers, saying the ship will “play a vital role in enhancing the overall combat effectiveness" of its forces. China already has the world's largest navy in terms of number of hulls, although its technology is sometimes seen as lagging. China's People’s Liberation Army Navy operates mainly in waters off the Chinese east coast and in the huge and strategically crucial South China Sea, which China claims almost in its entirety.

EasyJet cuts losses, shares drop on expectations of second-quarter weakness
(Reuters) -EasyJet's shares dropped to their lowest level since October on Wednesday as the company flagged weaker revenue expectations for the second quarter, but the airline cut losses in the first quarter and kept its profit guidance for the year. EasyJet, the first UK airline to report results, produced a smaller first-quarter operating loss on easing fuel costs and strong passenger demand for travel and its holiday packages. "Looking to this summer, we have seen continuing demand for easyJet's flights and holidays where we have one million more customers already booked, with firm favourites like Palma, Faro and Alicante," new CEO Kenton Jarvis said in a statement.

Russia says it sees window of opportunity to negotiate with Trump administration
"We cannot say anything today about the degree of the incoming administration's capacity to negotiate, but still, compared to the hopelessness in every aspect of the previous White House chief (Joe Biden), there is a window of opportunity today, albeit a small one," Ryabkov said, according to Interfax. "It's therefore important to understand with what and whom we will have to deal, how best to build relations with Washington, how best to maximise opportunities and minimise risks," he said, speaking at the Institute for U.S. and Canadian Studies, a think-tank in Moscow.

Aid chief says US aid pause 'disastrous' for Afghanistan
The head of a major humanitarian organisation said U.S. President Donald Trump's order to halt foreign aid for 90 days would have immediate and disastrous consequences in Afghanistan where relief operations are already stretched thin. As he took office on Monday, Trump ordered a temporary pause in foreign development aid pending assessments of efficiencies and consistency with his foreign policy. The scope of the order was not clear, including whether it applied to Afghanistan's humanitarian funding, which is channelled through NGOs and United Nations agencies.
