The Joseph Gordon-Levitt Aging Timeline

Before he landed the TV show that would make him famous, in 1994 Gordon-Levitt was just a struggling child star from L.A. Not really! He actually starred in the children's film "Angels in the Outfield."

Then, in 1996, only in his mid-teens, JGL launched to fame as Tommy Solomon in "3rd Rock From the Sun." Check out the 'do!

In 1998, Gordon-Levitt starred in the teen comedy "10 Things I Hate About You," opposite an equally fresh-faced Heath Ledger. As we all know, Ledger went on to win a posthumous Oscar for playing the Joker in "The Dark Knight," while Gordon-Levitt played John Blake (spoiler alert: his real name is Robin!) in "The Dark Knight Rises." Who would have thought?

In 2000, JGL was still rocking the short 'do, though he did sport a pair of jaunty sideburns.

After "3rd Rock" ended, JGL made his way into the independent film scene and showed up to the premiere of "Mysterious Skin" in 2004 looking like a dapper gent.

Having landing a cult following with his turns in "Brick" and "Shadowboxer," JGL cut down to the basics in 2006.

Around the time of the 2009 indie hit "(500) Days of Summer," JGL started embracing his boho chic side.

But a year later, he was back to looking dapper -- and, dare we say, presidential?

Later in 2011, JGL started bulking up to appear as a bike courier in "Premium Rush." "I trained for six weeks, five days a week," he said at the time.

JGL was at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival, as his sci-fi action film "Looper" opened the festival. He also promoted his art collaboration Hit Record at TIFF, looking slightly leaner than he did while careening around New York on his bike.

While everyone else was watching Jennifer Lawrence fall, we were watching JGL really wear that tux at the Oscars in February 2013.

Earlier in 2013, JGL kept his buff bod under wraps while promoting "Don Jon" at SXSW.

"Don Jon," Joseph-Gordon Levitt's directorial debut, screens at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival. The film, which the actor also wrote, centres on a porn-addicted man (also played by Gordon-Levitt) who falls for a beautiful girl (Scarlett Johansson) who has her own obsession with romantic comedies.
