Keith Arem is heading to the front lines.

The talent director of the record-breaking Activision Blizzard video game "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2," which has now grossed $3 billion, will make his feature directing debut with the action-thriller "Frost Road." Arem also wrote the script and is developing a companion graphic novel with co-creator Brandon Humphreys and artist Christopher Shy.

Sandra Bullock, who is enjoying a career resurgence with the success of "The Proposal" and "The Blind Side," will be honored with the Santa Barbara International Film Festival's American Riviera Award, which will be presented to her on Feb. 5 at the Arlington Theatre in Santa Barbara.

The award recognizes "an actor who has had a strong influence on American cinema."

The 21st annual Palm Springs International Film Festival will bestow its Career Achievement Award on Helen Mirren at the fest's awards gala on Jan. 5 at the Palm Springs Convention Center.

An Oscar winner for "The Queen," Mirren stars in "The Last Station," playing Leo Tolstoy's wife. Sony Pictures Classics is releasing the film on Dec. 23.

NEW YORK -- "Avatar" could make more than $250 million in the U.S. and Canada, and draw new audiences to 3D films, Regal Entertainment Group's chief executive said Tuesday.

Amy Miles, who runs the world's largest theater operator, said "Avatar" appeals to older viewers who have not seen 3D films because many recent 3D releases have been animated movies appealing to children, such as "Monsters vs. Aliens" and "Up."

LONDON -- The Dubai International Film Festival plans to stage its sixth edition this year despite the emirate being in financial meltdown and stock markets across the globe plummeting amid exposure to its debt crisis.

Putting on a positive front early Tuesday, festival organizers unveiled a glittering lineup of movies, including James Cameron's "Avatar," enough to make other festivals blue with envy. The lineup also boasts Rob Marshall's big-screen adaptation of stage musical "Nine" as its Dec. 9 opener.

ASIFA-Hollywood embraced the full range of animation -- from traditional to stop-motion to 3-D CG -- as it announced the nominees for its 37th annual Annie Awards.

Nominated for best animated feature are the 3-D movies "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" from Sony Animation and "Up," from Pixar/Disney; stop-motion films "Coraline" from Laika/Focus and "Fantastic Mr. Fox" from Fox; and the traditionally-animated "The Secret of Kells" from Cartoon Saloon and "The Princess and the Frog" from Disney.

Jeff Robinov, president of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, to whom Silverman will report, announced the promotion Monday.
