LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" rose to the top of movie box office charts for the second straight week on Sunday with a three-day haul of $42.5 million, pushing the film's total ticket sales to nearly $231 million in North America, according to studio estimates.

Over the five-day U.S. Thanksgiving holiday, the vampire romance starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner took in $66 million in North America, said independent studio Summit Entertainment that backed the movie.

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - There's no doubt that "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" will rise to the top of the domestic box office again over the coming long holiday weekend.

But Warner Bros. should peel more than a few young males away from that picture's female-driven fan frenzy to support the opening of martial-arts action movie "Ninja Assassin." And Disney looks likely to post an even more lucrative session to nab one of the medal positions in the weekend's box-office rankings with family-friendly comedy "Old Dogs," starring John Travolta, Robin Williams, Seth Green and Kelly Preston.

"New Moon" star Taylor Lautner's personal life might be just as popular than his movies - but the young star is remaining tight-lipped on the details.

The vampire romance sequel vastly exceeded expectations, which had started at $100 million ahead of its release but steadily rose to about $125 million as early sales data rolled in on Friday.

LOS ANGELES - Vampires and werewolves have vanquished a dark knight. "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" took in $72.7 million in its first day to break the single day domestic box office record previously held by "The Dark Knight," which had a $67.2 million opening day last year.

The Friday haul for the "Twilight" sequel includes a record $26.3 million from midnight screenings alone.
