The movie was remarkable. The plot was easy to follow and it touched many contemporary social issues that have yet to be addressed or accepted in many cultures: lesbian/gay rights, infidelity, hypocrisy, politics, alcoholism, and elitism to name a few.
Keira's performance is nothing short of an Oscar. She carries herself with such grace on the screen. She is very dreamy and her portrayel of the Duchess makes you empathize with her strife that culminates in an abortive pursuit of passion and love. In the end she gets a taste of both worlds, realizing that the only thing that constraints her is her love for her family. Yes, the movie could have discussed more about her influence in politics, gambling, and alcoholism, but I am glad that it did not becuase in the end those topics in her life were a means to an end, sacrifice being the ultimate choice. |
