Occassionally Amusing, but Dull Gangster-Comedy
by PhilosopherJay (movies profile)

This movie is apparently based on several Damon Runyon short stories. Each of the stories is cute and amusing, but they are not really put together in a compelling manner.
Madonna was nominated for a Razzi (worst actress)award for her part, which only shows how stupid the Razzies awards are. In fact, it is one of her better and most relaxed performances. The movie really becomes most interesting when she's on-screen; which, unfortunately, is only for about fifteen minutes.
Jennifer Gray, Rutger Hauer and Randy Quaid are also fine.
It is probably worth seeing for comparison purposes to Woody Allen's much better "Bullets Over Broadway." It covers the same ground, but moves much faster and delivers sharper lines.
I think if you do not expect too much from this film, you'll find it amusing and tolerable. However, if you're expecting "Guys and Dolls," you'll be disappointed. |
