Kurt Gerron was a leading light in Weimar cabaret, having sung the first public performance of "Mack the Knife" among other hits. When he was taken to Theresienstadt concentration camp in 1943, he was spared deportation in exchange for performing. He thought this would save his life, but ultimately, he too was sent to Auschwitz where he perished in 1944.
