An Algerian man who escapes from confinement--insisting that he's a political prisoner--sets out to cross his countryside which is ravaged by war. That which he finds: former political activists now settled in colonial towns, laborers oppressed by their Algerian bosses, women mourning their slain children, and youths dreaming of escaping to France, only serves to make his escape a bittersweet gesture of freedom and justice.
