‘The Trip to Italy’ clip: Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon mock ‘The Dark Knight Rises’
Even if you missed director Michael Winterbottom’s fantastic 2010 movie “The Trip,” you likely saw this viral clip of stars Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon having a hilarious Michael Caine impersonation contest. As seen above, the pair are back for another round of Caine-personation (plus some Christian Bale and Tom Hardy) in the first clip from the sequel, “The Trip to Italy.”
In the original road trip comedy, Coogan and Brydon played versions of themselves and saw the two taking in the restaurants and sights of northern England. “The Trip,” which premiered at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival, was actually an abridged version of a six-episode TV series of the same name.
Luckily for fans of the show and/or the film (or at least of those killer Caine impressions), Winterbottom, Coogan, and Brydon are back for another vacation -- this time to Italy. The aptly titled “The Trip to Italy” follows the duo as they discuss things like life, work, and “The Dark Knight Rises,” while on a food tour of some of Italy’s best restaurants.
Sure, "The Trip to Italy" just looks like more of the same (according to some early reviews from Sundance, it's precisely that), but as clips like this demonstrate, you could film Coogan and Brydon almost anywhere and it would still be incredibly entertaining. The only debate now is this: whose Michael Caine impression is better?
The TV version of "The Trip to Italy" will air sometime this year, and the film version will more than likely find a home at TIFF 2014 in September.
