Is Shia LaBeouf retiring from public life?

The bizarre ongoing saga of “Transformers” star Shia LaBeouf took an unexpected turn early Friday morning when the 27-year-old actor, admitted plagiarist and serial apologist, announced on Twitter that he's "retiring from all public life" effective immediately.

It's unclear whether LaBeouf’s late-night tweets mean he's finished with acting and filmmaking altogether or if he's simply taking some time off. This latest outburst is yet another strange turn in this already weird story that may or may not be some form of performance art.

Back in December, the actor found himself in trouble when it was deduced that his short film “HowardCantour.com” was essentially an uncredited adaptation of acclaimed cartoonist Daniel Clowes’ 2007 comic "Justin M. Damiano." The film debuted at the Cannes Film Festival last year to positive reviews, but there has been an intense backlash against LaBeouf since it was discovered most of the film was ripped off from Clowes. LaBeouf has spent the majority of the past month apologizing via his Twitter account and using aircraft to make his regrets known.

Retired or not, LaBeouf will next be seen on the big screen in Lars von Trier’s controversial film “Nymphomaniac,” an explicit role that reportedly required the actor to provide eccentric Danish director with pictures of his penis and video of him having sex with his then-girlfriend. Basically, everything and anything LaBeouf is currently involved in scores high on the weird scale. This is either an Andy Kaufman/Joaquin Phoenix-style piece of meta performance art or a legitimate public meltdown. It's really anyone’s guess at this point.
