‘Ruby Sparks’ trailer: Paul Dano falls in love with a girl he created
If you are to believe the romantics of the world, every person has a soul mate out there somewhere. Sometimes you'll have to look pretty hard to find that special person, while other times that person may just fall right into your lap. That's essentially the plot of the film "Ruby Sparks," the new rom-com from the husband-and-wife team of Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris.
Paul Dano ("There Will Be Blood") reteams with his "Little Miss Sunshine" directors to play Calvin, a lonely author struggling to write his first big novel. Calvin's main character, Ruby Sparks (Zoe Kazan), is his dream girl: She's smart, funny, cute, and basically everything and anything he could want her to be. Ruby is great, but since she's only a fictional character, Calvin has little chance at a romance with her.
That is, until Ruby shows up at Calvin's house one day.
Boy writes girl, falls in love with girl, girl becomes real. It's like if Pinocchio were made out of paper! Check out the trailer for "Ruby Sparks" below.
Not only is "Ruby Sparks" Zoe Kazan's first major starring role, but it's also the first feature film she's written. The actress has moviemaking in her blood, being the daughter of screenwriters Nicholas Kazan and Robin Swicord, and the granddaughter of famed filmmaker Elia Kazan ("On the Waterfront"). That's some serious filmmaking pedigree.
Coincidentally, Kazan is also dating her co-star Paul Dano in real life. The two played husband and wife in 2010's "Meek's Cutoff."
In addition to the two excellent leads, the film also features a stellar supporting cast that includes Annette Benning, Antonio Banderas, Steve Coogan, and Elliott Gould. Between the wonderful ensemble cast and the interesting plot, "Ruby Sparks" is definitely a film to look out for.
"Ruby Sparks" will have a limited release on July 25.
