‘Man of Steel’ sequel will shoot in Detroit and Toronto

Who needs Gotham City or Metropolis when you’ve got Motown and Hogtown?

We’ve known since Comic Con that Warner Bros. and director Zack Snyder plan to pit Superman (Henry Cavill) and Batman (Ben Affleck) against one another in the upcoming “Man of Steel” sequel. But where exactly the Big Blue Boy Scout and the Dark Knight were going to throw down – that is, where the big budget superhero movie would be filmed – was still very much up in the air.

“Man of Steel” was primarily shot in Vancouver, B.C. and the area in and around Chicago, Illinois. It seemed likely that production on the superpowered sequel might return to B.C. (given Snyder’s long history of shooting movies there), but last month rumours began circulating that the Superman vs. Batman production would be jumping ship for Toronto. That rumour was confirmed last week when news broke that exteriors for the film would be shot on-location in Detroit, Michigan and the rest shot in-studio in Toronto.

Quips about Detroit and Toronto’s eerie similarities to the fictional Gotham and Metropolis aside, the mega-budget Superman vs. Batman film is one of the most highly anticipated films of the decade. The massive movie production is sure to be an economic boon for both cities. WB reportedly received $35 million in incentives from Michigan to shoot the film in Detroit – an investment that is sure to create plenty of jobs in the perennially struggling and recently bankrupt city.

As for Toronto, given the city’s history with the famous DC Comics character, it's strangely appropriate that the still untitled “Superman” sequel will be filmed there. Superman creator Joe Shuster was born in Toronto before emigrating to the United States, and said in interviews that he based Metropolis on the Canadian city. A former newsboy for the Toronto Star (then the Toronto Daily Star), Shuster also based Clark Kent’s employers – the Daily Planet – on the Canadian newspaper. Although it may not overtly double for Metropolis in the film, shooting in Toronto will still be a homecoming of sorts for the Man of Steel.

Filming on the "Man of Steel" sequel is expected to begin early next year with a July 17, 2015 release date planned.
