New ‘Hobbit’ trailer gets five different endings

This is like "Return of the King" all over again! Director Peter Jackson's upcoming "Lord of the Rings" prequel, "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," already has more in common with its predecessors than just its Middle Earth setting and characters. In true Jackson fashion, the most recent trailer for "The Hobbit" also boasts multiple endings -- practically a trademark of the New Zealand director after the infamously overlong conclusion to the last "Lord of the Rings" film.

There are five alternate versions of the trailer, each featuring footage and dialogue not seen in the other iterations. All told, the alternate scenes total about a minute and a half of new footage from the film. In addition to the different endings, the new "Hobbit" trailer also offers our first real look at Radagast the Brown (Sylvester McCoy), a woodsy ally of Gandalf, as well as a few shots of Bilbo's fateful confrontation with the corrupted Gollum (Andy Serkis) beneath the Misty Mountains.

Set about sixty years prior to the events of "The Lord of the Rings," "An Unexpected Journey" follows original ring-bearer Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) as he embarks upon a dangerous adventure with the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and a band of dwarves seeking to reclaim their homeland from the dragon Smaug. In addition to McKellen re-donning Gandalf's robe and wizard hat for "The Hobbit," Cate Blanchett, Hugo Weaving, and Orlando Bloom are all set to reprise their Elven "Lord of the Rings" roles in the film and its followups.

Funnily enough, the release of the new "Hobbit" trailer(s) this week coincides with a pretty significant anniversary for J.R.R. Tolkien's original children's book: Sept. 21 marks the 75th anniversary of the first publishing of "The Hobbit."
