‘Game of Thrones’ star Peter Dinklage joining ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’

The cast of director Bryan Singer's highly anticipated "X-Men: Days of Future Past" just keeps on growing.

Actor Peter Dinklage, star of HBO's acclaimed fantasy series "Game of Thrones," is the latest star to join the upcoming mutant-powered sequel. Look out, mutants! There's a Lannister in the X-verse!

Singer continued his habit of announcing the film's cast via his official Twitter account, enthusiastically welcoming the Emmy and Golden Globe-winning Dinklage to the project late last night.

Singer's official confirmation tweet came just a few hours after Deadline reported that the director was considering the "Thrones" actor for a role in the newest "X-Men" film. Dinklage adds his Emmy and Golden Globe-winning talents to the already ridiculously stacked X-ensemble, which includes the likes of Hugh Jackman, Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Ellen Page, Anna Paquin, and sirs Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart. Based on the popular "Days of Future Past" comic book storyline, the film will unite cinematic X-Men past and present with a plot centered on time travel.

There is no word on who Dinklage will play in the film, but there is certainly no shortage of possibilities in the X-Men universe. Many fans have already theorized that the 4'5 actor would be a perfect fit for the diminutive Canadian superhero Puck. Puck is a member of Canada's mutant superteam, Alpha Flight, and friend to Logan/Wolverine (Hugh Jackman). He is a skilled fighter with damage-resistant rubber-like skin - hence the nickname. If Puck is Dinklage's role, we hope his Canadian accent is a little better than the sometimes cringeworthy faux-British accent he brandishes on "Game of Thrones."

But Puck isn't the only X-Men character that Dinklage could be playing. Giant mutant-hunting robots called Sentinels will reportedly figure heavily into "Days of Future Past," and some fans have speculated that Dinklage could be playing the robotic supervillain Master Mold - the artificial intelligence in charge of manufacturing the Sentinels.

Given the sometimes hilarious convoluted nature of the X-Men universe, there are definitely other possible roles for Dinklage to play, but those two seem like the most plausible at this point. The sheer number of characters in the long running Marvel comic book series means that there is no shortage of mutants to choose from. Whoever the actor does end up playing in "Days of Future Past," he's an excellent addition to an already amazing cast.

"X-Men: Days of Future Past" is set for a July 18, 2014 release.
