First trailer for Ben Wheatley’s ‘Sightseers’

Whatever happened to the idyllic and pastoral England of yesteryear? The England of green hills, winding roads, and pleasant people --If director Ben Wheatley is to be believed, that place no longer exists. The Essex-born filmmaker's vision of the United Kingdom's suburban and rural communities is not a very friendly one. In fact, it's downright scary.

Wheatley made a big splash at the Toronto International Film Festival last year with his hitman horror film "Kill List," and although his new movie "Sightseers" won't be playing at the 2012 festival, it will be opening in theatres across the pond in just a few months. The twisted comedy produced by Edgar Wright ("Shaun of the Dead," "Hot Fuzz") tells the story of Chris (Steve Oram) and Tina (Alice Lowe), a couple whose well-meaning vacation to the North of England turns into a deranged and deadly crime spree after a series of events push Chris over the edge.

The first gleefully disturbed (and slightly not safe for work) trailer for "Sightseers" is online now. Watch it below.

At first glance "Sightseers" looks like some strange mashup of "Bonnie & Clyde," "The Trip" and "Natural Born Killers," but given Wheatley's troubling previous work there's sure to be some pretty dark stuff in the film.

"Sightseers" premiered at the Cannes Film Fest back in May (as "Touristes"), to positive reviews, with the general consensus amongst the critics being that the film was smart, unsettling, and very funny. The film doesn't have a North American release date yet, but with Wright's involvement and the glowing reviews you can probably expect a limited theatrical run at some point.
