First ‘Avengers’ clip: Scarlett Johansson kicks butt, breaks chairs

Sure, she might not have super strength, a magic hammer, or dangerous anger issues, but Scarlett Johansson's character in Marvel's upcoming superhero ensemble "The Avengers" is clearly not someone to be messed with.

The first official clip from "The Avengers" shows master assassin Natasha Romanova (codename: Black Widow) skillfully dispatching numerous baddies... and one very unfortunate chair. Check out Scarlett in action below.

ScarJo has her work cut out for her as the lone female member of the super team, but this bone-crushing clip proves she's more than capable of keeping up with even the most superpowered of boys. Aliens? Demi-gods? Pfft... our money's on Black Widow.

Johansson previously played the assassin in "Iron Man 2," besting Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark at every turn -- events that will no doubt be alluded to in "The Avengers." If the super-sized superhero movie is a box office success (and there seems little doubt of that at this point), the chances of a much-rumoured standalone film for Johansson's deadly S.H.I.E.L.D. agent are very high. Numerous Marvel superhero cameos would naturally be a must.

However, Black Widow will have to deal with the events of "The Avengers" first. The Joss Whedon film pits Earth's mightiest heroes -- Iron Man (Downey Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Captain America (Chris Evans), the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), and Black Widow (Johansson) -- against an invasion led by Thor's devious brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston).

Marvel and Disney's mega-budgeted "The Avengers" smashes into theatres on May 4.
