‘Dukes of Hazzard’ rumoured reboot could come to you courtesy of ‘Eastbound and Down’ creator Jody Hill
Filmmaker Jody Hill has established himself as something of an enigma in Hollywood. Since his mainstream debut with the extremely dark comedy "Observe & Report," the director has become known for his twisted sense of humour.
As the co-creator of HBO's comedy series "Eastbound and Down," Hill has been able to take this brand of comedy to extremes with the help of star Danny McBride along with Will Ferrell and frequent partner in crime David Gordon Green ("Pineapple Express"). Hill's style of comedy isn't for everyone and definitely doesn't fit the traditional Hollywood mold, but now the North Carolina native has been tasked by Warner Bros. to potentially reboot a major property. And by the sound of it, things are going to get weird.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. has hired Hill to write and direct an as-yet-untitled action project set in the southern United States. The report also says that the project may or may not become a reboot of "The Dukes of Hazzard," but that the studio is waiting for Hill to finish his script before deciding what the film will be.
Set in the 1970s and described as an outlaw tale in the vein of director Sam Peckinpah's work -- characterized by ultraviolent movies like "The Wild Bunch" and "Straw Dogs" -- Hill's version would not exactly be the "Dukes" audiences know and love.
The last time the "Dukes of Hazzard" boys appeared on the big screen was in 2005, with Johnny Knoxville and Seann William Scott portraying the Georgia cousins. That film was a lighthearted (if raunchy) comedy and a far cry from the Peckinpah tone that Hill seems to be pursuing.
Hill's previous work is full of kooky small-towners and good ol' boys, so he seems like a natural fit for the project. However, judging by his past work, his take on "The Dukes of Hazzard" — if it even becomes that — will likely be a dark and strange affair. Audiences expecting the slapstick Dukes may be in for a rude surprise.
