‘The Dark Knight Rises’ trailer hits the Internet, fans go wild

The Internet was minding its own business late last night when Warner Bros. and Christopher Nolan decided to drop a bomb -- a trailer bomb, that is. After a brief viral campaign teasing the release of the new theatrical trailer for Nolan's "The Dark Knight Rises," the studio released it into the wild, where it exploded. If you were doing anything online last night, it probably included watching the new trailer for "The Dark Knight Rises."

If the buzz on social networks like Twitter and Facebook is any indication, millions of people have likely already seen (and subsequently shared) the trailer. The video has racked up nearly one million views on YouTube in less than 12 hours, and that's only the official version. Thanks to unofficial sharing of the trailer on sites like Tumblr and Twitter, "The Dark Knight Rises" has been trending online since last night, with hashtags like "#TDKR" tracking dozens and dozens of new trailer-related posts every minute.

This kind of user-generated viral marketing is driving awareness of "The Dark Knight Rises" like no other film this year. Even celebrities are getting in on the action. Former Fall Out Boy rocker Pete Wentz took to Twitter to sum up the Internet's feelings after the trailer hit.

You might laugh about such a tweet, but Mr. Wentz has more than two million followers on the micro-blogging site. That kind of audience is no laughing matter.

For many, the July 20 release of "The Dark Knight Rises" can't come quickly enough, a fact that is sure to help the film at the box office. There is little doubt that Nolan's third Bat-outing will do exceedingly well financially, since his previous two Batman films have grossed nearly $1.5 billion worldwide. Still, with this kind of buzz, "The Dark Knight Rises" may be poised to shatter "The Dark Knight's" record-breaking take.

Only one question remains: Will the big superhero hope of DC and Warner Bros. be able to top Marvel and Disney's box office juggernaut "The Avengers"? Either way, fans of comic book adventures on the big screen come out on top.
