Chloe Moretz cast in ‘Carrie’ remake
They're all going to laugh at you! While it's regrettable that MGM has caught remake fever in an effort to dig itself out of a financial hole, it is at least proving that it wants to make reboots like "Robocop" and now "Carrie" somewhat watchable by hiring interesting directors and actors to star in them.
As was rumoured earlier this week and then later confirmed by Deadline, actress Chloë Moretz ("Kick-Ass," "Hugo") is in negotiations to play the titular telekinetic teenager in "Carrie." The "Let Me In" star has had a slew of high-profile roles in recent years and beat out a number of other young actresses for the coveted part, including Emily Browning ("Sucker Punch") and Dakota Fanning ("Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2"). Author Stephen King, who wrote the original novel, was quoted as saying he'd love to see Lindsay Lohan play the role. Sorry, Lindsay!
The role in "Carrie" means that it's going to be yet another busy year for Moretz. The actress can next be seen on the big screen in another remake, Tim Burton's adaptation of the 1970s TV series "Dark Shadows," and has another four films in pre-production right now.
Directed by Kimberley Pierce ("Boys Don't Cry"), the new "Carrie" film will be the third remake of Stephen King's memorable 1974 novel -- fourth if you count the unfortunate 1999 sequel/rehash "The Rage: Carrie 2." According to Deadline, the remake will hew closer to King's original book than Brian De Palma's 1976 adaptation starring Sissy Spacek, which has become something of a horror classic since its release. The film will follow Carrie, a bullied teen who uses newly-discovered telekinetic powers to exact a terrible revenge on her tormentors.
Carrie enjoys a complex relationship with her mother in both the novel and De Palma's film. Producers of the remake are said to be pursuing Sarah Palin herself, "Game Change's" Julianne Moore for the role of Carrie's unstable mother. The film is currently in pre-production and will begin filming later this year for a 2013 release.
