Let’s All Take a Moment and Ponder a New ‘Evil Dead’ Movie

You have to be careful what you read in the entertainment press, particularly when it's a producer or director or star saying there's "been discussions" about doing a sequel to or a remake of a beloved film. "Been discussions" doesn't mean it's actually going to happen: It just means at least two human beings had a conversation where they imagined what it might be like to do it. But when these stories show up in print, they feel much more real than it probably was at the time.

With that in mind, we'd like to tell you that you should probably not get too excited about the prospect of a remake of "The Evil Dead," the 1981 low-budget horror movie that put director Sam Raimi and star Bruce Campbell on the map. (Raimi went on to do "Spider-Man" films, while Campbell very happily remained a beloved cult actor.)

There's been talk of doing a new version of the film, which spawned two sequels, and Campbell has said that he's read the script. The comment came up during an interview on Reddit, but as far as anything concrete is concerned, well, that's a little harder to come by: "NEWSFLASH: We are remaking Evil Dead. The script is awesome. I will be one of the producers and possibly play the milk man."

So, Campbell wants you to know that he'd like for this remake to happen -- and he obviously won't play Ash in the new version. Now, will that be happening soon? Probably not: While Raimi is not expected to be directing this new version, he's nonetheless going to be very busy dealing with the "Wizard of Oz" prequel, "Oz, the Great and Powerful," for a little while.

But while Campbell promises that the "Evil Dead" remake will "kick ass," we admit to being ambivalent about a new version, for all the reasons you might assume. However, we also admit that we would be curious if Raimi and Campbell would put their muscle behind making a big-screen adaptation of "Evil Dead the Musical," which, yes, is a traveling musical version of the series. At least this looks like it captures the knowingly campy, cheesy spirit of the original, even if the production values are, well, kinda awful:
