Oddest Oscar Dress: Credit Card Creation That Topped Swan Gown

WireImageBjork's swan gown at the Oscars in 2001 was a showstopper, and not in a good way. But one Oscar nominee can take credit (pun intended) for the most bizarre look on the red carpet: the American Express dress.

Here's the story. The woman in the golden gown of plastic, Lizzy Gardiner, was nominated for best costume design back in 1994. The dress was an idea she had dreamed up for the movie "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert."

According to the Credit Card Forum blog, the credit card company had passed on the "Priscilla" dress concept for the film but liked the idea of the nominee wearing it to the Academy Awards ceremony so much that it sent her 300 custom platinum cards with her name embossed on them.

The dress was a success: Gardiner won the award and was then featured in American Express ads.

No question about it, the gown may have been a play for corporate sponsorship, but it certainly did not win its maker any marks for fashion sense. Cosmopolitan rated it as one of the "worst Oscar dresses ever."

Time also gave it a thumbs-down, calling it "tacky." Maybe next time Gardiner will use one of those cards to buy herself a better dress.

Wow! What is her credit limit?

The dress is very lovely to me. I couldn't care less about the fabric (credit cards). The overall effect is creative and she wears it well.

Well luckily she did not leave home without it!

Platinum cards ? They look gold to me.

They were gold, another case of ineffective reporting by a Yahoo! reporter who doesn't check her sources beforehand.

Actually, I like this better that the usual Oscar dresses! It's fun and creative. If more of the participants in the Oscar ceremony dressed like this, I may actually start watching the Oscars again. I used to watch the Oscars when I was a teen-ager. Back then, people wore crazy clothes and wild things happened. But I haven't bothered catching the Oscars in ages. These days, the celebrities play it safe. This may keep them off of the "worst dressed list" and spare them from Joan Rivers' rude comments, but it makes for a boring show to watch.

only time American express will have declining interest ~!!!!!!!!!
    • rektree 2 months ago
Interest would go up if the number of cards would go down.

LOL, I'd never seen this before! It's ugly, but it's funny. She had a good time with it, what else matters?

I guess in a world before Lady Gaga the credit card dress seemed bizarre.
Now it seems tame and almost sensible (she could use it to buy dinner and not worry about bringing her purse)

One of the worst? I thought it was GREAT! I mean, she won for costume design for "Priscilla" What a cool, fun idea!

GOOD THING, she didn't need her purse...she just kept saying PUT IT ON THE CARD

She's a costume designer and the dress IS a costume she originally planned for a movie; it's creative and fun and as a novelty dress, with an underlying touch of class (these are gold cards, after all) and it's a great color on her. I love it! The swan dress was distasteful and showed a complete lack of respect for all those in attendance (like wearing a clown suit to a high society political fundraiser).

Nothing, absolutely nothing beats the swan dress, most hideous ever
  • CaliCoyote  •  2 months ago
No, doesn't top the dead swan dress. I think it's clever and funny and actually pretty stylish.

Why waste your valuable time watching these worthless individuals.

Why does everyone *have* to wear something staid and boring to the Oscars? Why can't people have fun with what they wear? Does anyone remember those staid and boring looks from the past? Nope. They remember this gorgeous, quirky and original credit card gown!

credit cards can also be used to undress ladies

I like it and the fashionistas of the media don't have a lock on what looks good and what doesn't
