Academy: Sacha Baron Cohen Not ‘Banned’ From Oscars But ‘Dictator’ Stunt Unwelcome

The mystery of Sacha Baron Cohen's plans for the Oscars has deepened, with the Academy going on the record to deny an online report that the comic actor has had his tickets for Hollywood's biggest event yanked.

"We haven't banned him," an Academy spokesperson tells The Hollywood Reporter. "We're just waiting to hear what he's going to do."

Still, the Academy is making it clear that Cohen is not welcome to use the red carpet as a platform for a promotional stunt for his upcoming movie The Dictator, and other sources say the threat of booting him became more substantial on Wednesday.

THR first reported Tuesday that the actor, invited to attend the Oscars as a castmember of best picture nominee Hugo, was hatching a plan to arrive at the event dressed as his Dictator character, a crass totalitarian leader hellbent on keeping democracy out of his country.

THR's story prompted the Academy to notify Cohen's reps and Paramount, the studio behind both Hugo and Dictator, that it would like to know exactly what Cohen has planned. "We don't think it's appropriate," the Academy spokesman tells THR of the prospect of Cohen "hijacking" the red carpet to plug his movie. "But his tickets haven't been pulled. We're waiting to hear back."

A Paramount spokesperson did not immediately return a call seeking comment. (UPDATE: Paramount declined to comment.) Cohen's publicist has not returned an email seeking comment.

Cohen has a history of using awards shows and other big events to hype his movies. To help launch Borat in 2006, Cohen arrived at the Toronto International Film Festival dressed up as his TV journalist alter ego, riding a wagon pulled by "Kazakhstani peasant women." At the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, he came as gay fashionista Bruno (to promote Bruno).

The Academy is careful to exclude studio-specific film promotion from its annual Oscars telecast (it only recently allowed movie ads to run during commercial breaks), so Cohen's plans are being taken very seriously.

Look at all the free publicity Yahoo just gave him. Even if he doesn't wear this on the red carpet, he has succeeded.

For some reason I thought the 2012 Oscars already happened. Glad to realize there's still time not to watch them.

So the last place to promote your movie is at the Academy Awards? Gotcha ...

Let me see if I can understand this correctly the USA is all about freedom yet the "Academy", a solely American entity, is denying Sacha Baron Cohen's his freedom of expression, ok I'm officially confused. I wonder if they can spell hypocrisy, or better yet understand the definition of the word hypocrisy. The "Academy" sounds rather like a dictatorship to me. So wouldn't it be appropriate for Sacha Cohen to be his character at the awards in Academies honour.

LOL they can't spell, they don't even know that where their president live's. But they all know where Sponge Bob live's.

As if other actors don't push their movies on the red carpet. Sasha Cohen loves controversy so the Academy doesn't want him around. Those Oscar people should get together and pull those bugs out of their collective behinds.

They should get him to host the oscars in his movie characters. Put some life back into the "thank my mother and my brother who's my uncle thing".

I'm pretty sure their all in on this hyping up the movie.

The majority of those commenting seem to find Cohen either boring or disgusting and would like to see him banned. Is that how they deal with all opinions that differ from theirs? I suspect it is. Too bad. Not a very "American" way to approach the subject.

to allow people you disagree with to speak their mind is to protect freedom speech, it's something we all must do. just be sure to disagree with them equally, if not more vocal

Not Dictator related, But the sound of the academy awards is borderline Incompetent, everyone's voice sounds metallic, on the verge of feedback, and dissonance. there are local poorly paid sound men, who can avoid dissonance and feedback with a Rock or Metal band who are playing way too loud in a room that is way too small for their volume. Why can't the internationally broadcast ACADEMY AWARDS get control of the sound?

If actors want to show up in character then let them. The winners are already chosen by the time they show up on the red carpet so they aren't influencing anyone and it would make the show more interesting to watch if 'the Dictator' were seated next to Hannibal Lecter and Darth Vader. Put some mascots in the back seats like those people in Disney character costumes and maybe a robot T-Rex from Jurassic Park. I'd rather watch that than the actual award speeches. Viva the character awards.

Like no one else at the Oscars hawks upcoming films. Other than nominees, all the others presenters are pushing some film.

1st let me say I dislike all of his characters. Have suffered through them because my hubby enjoys his so-called humor.
2nd, i feel the academy awards is a waste of time. it is too long and it usually has movies i could not be bothered to waste my hard earned money on
3rd, i dont see the point of the academy awards. the actors are over paid for doing less imprtant work than a doctor or police officer. but do they get awards shows televised...no.
  • Wyliecoyote  •  2 months ago
By making such a fuss over it, the Academy is giving him far more press than it would if they just let him be himself. Prostituting yourself out for promotion and all....come on, that is Hollywood, that is the game that they all play.
  • skyoneder  •  2 months ago
He could get away with something like that maybe at the golden globes, but not at the prestigious crème de la crème Academy Awards.nope!
