Susan SarandonIt's hard to imagine, but Susan Sarandon was once a struggling actress trying to break into the industry. And like a lot of young women with stars in their eyes, Sarandon was not immune to the casting couch treatment.
"I just went into a room, and a guy practically threw me on the desk," the "Cloud Atlas" actress said in an interview appearing in the November issue of Elle [via Radar Online]. "It was my early days in New York, and it was really disgusting. It wasn't like I gave it a second thought, it was so badly done."
Sarandon, now 66, indicated she didn't cave to the pressure, nor did she get the gig for which she was auditioning: "It was not successful -- for either of us."
Sticking to her guns has served Sarandon well in her life and career. In spite of rebuffing the sexual advances of a lascivious, predatory industry insider, Sarandon carved her own path to stardom -- debuting on film opposite Peter Boyle in the 1970 drama "Joe," about a father who kills his daughter's drug-dealing boyfriend during a heated argument. By 1975 Sarandon starred in the cult classic "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" as the innocent young woman-gone liberated, Janet Weiss.

Sarandon's acting credits include a whopping 125 titles including five for which she was nominated for a Best Actress Academy Award: "Atlantic City" (1980), "Thelma & Louise" (1991), "Lorenzo's Oil" (1992), "The Client" (1994), and her Oscar-winning performance in "Dead Man Walking" (1995).

Sarandon appears in the epic time-bending tale as four different characters in "Cloud Atlas," in theaters next Friday, October 26.
