This year's MTV Movie Awards seemed to have so much promise. But with a Twitter hate campaign raging, a conspicuously missing key star (Jennifer Lawrence where were you!?), and some just plain odd happenings, we were left with one thought: Whaaaaaa?

One of those moments came when Will Ferrell teetered on the offensive as he brought three children and woman on stage, saying, "I wouldn't be standing here before you without the love and support of my amazing family." The laugh was supposed to come out of the fact that they were Asian -- not Caucasian like Mr. Ferrell. And yes, the audience was – for better or for worse -- into it.

The following are the 10 most bizarre moments of the 2013 MTV Movie Awards:

10. Quvenzhané Wallis, Alcoholic?
We didn't like the joke the first time when Seth MacFarlane alluded to the youngest best actress Oscar nominee as being a potential future date for George Clooney. So when host Rebel Wilson pointed her "koala cam" into the 9-year-old's cute little purse to reveal empty alcohol bottles, we can't say we were terribly amused. (Wallis, however, was caught chair dancing during commercial break. And it was super cute. She can do no wrong.)

9. Awkward Pubic Hair Jokes
From Seth Rogan's underwear of hair, to a Lena Dunham joke, to Chris Evan's supposed panties (with extra strands hanging out, seen on Wilson's koala cam), crotch hair was a rather unwanted theme that we wish could have been waxed off the show.

8. Whedon's Surprise
Really Joss Whedon? You were surprised "Marvel's The Avengers" beat out "Skyfall," "Ted," "Django Unchained," and "The Dark Knight Rises" in the Best Fight category? (The director said, "This was very unexpected.") Your movie, starring Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, and Jeremy Renner only made the most money (by far) last year, bringing in $1.5 billion worldwide.

7. Emma Watson's Unwarranted Prom
Please explain why Emma Watson, at 22 years old and just finding her way out of the "Harry Potter" series, deserves a MTV Breakthrough award exactly? Watson got a whole lot of face time during the show, also nominated for Best Kiss for her role in "The Perks of Being a Wallflower." Nothing against her, just confused. (But it was pretty funny when Jonah Hill joked they'd be starring in "Fifty Shades of Grey" together, telling her, "I need you to know one thing, my safety word is tangerine.")

6. Will Ferrell: Offensive?
When Will Ferrell won his Comedic Genius Award, his speech meandered all over the place. At one point he brought an Asian family on stage claiming they were his own relatives. Meh. His money suit was cool, though.

5. Melissa Misspoken McCarthy
That would be her rapper name if she based it on her pronunciation of "Django Unchained." While McCarthy listed the nominees for Best Male Performance, she called it "Django Untamed." Jamie Foxx wound up losing to Bradley Cooper in the category. Oops!

4. Twi-Hard Hatred
They didn't build it. So they didn't come. "Twilight" fans all over the world boycotted the show because the series ender, "Breaking Dawn – Part 2" got the cold shoulder when it came to nominations. (The series has won Best Picture four times leading up to this year's near shutout. Taylor Lautner represented, though, winning for the film's lone nomination in the Best Shirtless Performance category.)

3. Nebulous Nipple
Rebel, you're cool and all, but that third nipple joke toward the end of the show was heinous.

2. No Kiss This Year
So, you know that long standing tradition when the winners of the Best Kiss award reenact their on screen smooch? Welp, Jennifer Lawrence was not there to fulfill her duties with "Silver Linings Playbook" costar Bradley Cooper. And he was forced to accept the golden popcorn award solo. Excruciatingly awkward! (With the new "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" teaser debut at the end of the show, Lawrence's absence became even more glaring.)

1. Smoking On Stage!!!???
Okay, so we can't exactly confirm whether Snoop Lion and Ke$ha were actually smoking marijuana on stage as they introduced the musical acts Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, but we do know they were smoking something from a blunt-like cigarette. For realsies. And it was extremely peculiar.
