Exclusive: Kate Winslet’s ‘Titanic’ previously unseen screen test

Hey, that's not Leo!

In this never-before-seen footage of Kate Winslet's original screen test for "Titanic," one can't help but be completely thrown off by the actor reciting Jack's lines. In this scene above, obtained exclusively by Yahoo! in honor of the re-release of the "Titanic" Blu-ray, Jeremy Sisto ("Clueless," "Law & Order," "Suburgatory") stands in as Jack Dawson in a role that ultimately belonged to Leonardo DiCaprio. Sisto's deep voice and athletic 6'2" stature is in glaring contrast to DiCaprio's more spry depiction of Jack. In fact, Sisto comes across as so different from DiCaprio, he actually shares more traits with Billy Zane, who played the film's dark-haired villain Caledon 'Cal' Hockley.

Not to worry, Sisto was simply helping director James Cameron out with the screen test -- he himself was not auditioning for the part of Jack. (Though we can't rule out that Sisto hoped for the off chance of getting the part. That's how Harrison Ford was cast in the original "Star Wars," after all. Ford read the part of Han Solo against other actors who were auditioning for the roles of Luke and Leia. George Lucas had no intention of casting Ford until he realized that no one else who auditioned was any good.)

Interestingly, Winslet, who was only 19 years old at the time, was one of three actresses who screen-tested for the role of poor-little-rich-girl Rose -- Claire Forlani ("Meet Joe Black") and Michelle Monaghan ("Mission: Impossible III") are rumored to have been the other two. Rumors also put Gwyneth Paltrow in the running for the role of Rose, but Cameron refuses to confirm it. The tests were an early version of a scene that was shortened down for the finished film, and were done in a fully dressed set with the actresses wearing period costumes.

And when Winslet tested, it was obvious she was Rose. "[Kate] sent me a rose with a note that basically said 'I'm ready,'" Cameron recounted in commentary on the Blu-ray, adding that the then young actress handled herself under the enormous pressure of such an expansive film production.

"Titanic" is available now on Blu-ray and 3D Blu-ray.
