Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Olsen expected to join ‘Godzilla’ reboot.

The road has been bumpy for director Gareth Edwards’ upcoming “Godzilla” reboot, but that isn’t stopping the filmmaker from securing some important names for his cast.

It was reported that Bryan Cranston and Elizabeth Olsen are both in negotiation to appear with the latest screen incarnation of the big guy from Japan. If all goes according to plan, Cranston and Olsen will be starring alongside British actor Aaron Johnson.

Cranston, of course, is currently wrapping up his run in the successful and critically acclaimed cable series “Breaking Bad” as science teacher turned crystal meth kingpin Walter White. The success of “Breaking Bad” has given a boost to Cranston’s movie career; he’s in the Oscar front-runner “Argo,” and recently appeared in “Rock Of Ages,” “Total Recall” and “Red Tails.” (Like many others, he’s also trying to forget he was in “John Carter”).

Olsen, meanwhile, was for many years best known as the younger sister of cutie-pie twins Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, but that changed with Elizabeth’s striking performance in 2011’s indie success “Martha Marcy May Marlene.” Since then, Olsen has been pleasing critics in little-seen films like “Liberal Arts,” “Red Lights,” and “Peace, Love and Misunderstanding,” and she’ll be appearing in Spike Lee’s “Oldboy.”

And Johnson, already attached to the project, made his breakthrough in 2010, playing a young John Lennon in the well-reviewed British drama “Nowhere Boy.” Since then, he’s been seen in “Kick Ass,” “Albert Nobbs,” “Savages,” and “Anna Karenina.”

While “Godzilla” is currently scheduled to open on May 16, 2014, getting the film before the cameras has been something of a challenge.

Several screenwriters have been on and off the project, with Frank Darabont (whose credits include “The Shawshank Redemption” and the TV series “The Walking Dead”) reportedly at work on a new script. And production company Legendary Pictures is currently in a legal battle with three of the original producers on the picture, who claim they were let go without just cause. However, if movie history teaches us anything, “Godzilla” is an unstoppable force, and chances are excellent we’ll be seeing the monstrous lizard laying waste to a city as Cranston, Olson, and Johnson look on in the summer of 2014.
